Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true challenge confronting Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% growth for the European Union. Over this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Question

The growing disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a vital issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Experts widely agree it is largely a contest between two involving the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of major factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, excellent education systems, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. However, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
